I Can't Get the "View" field (Item Name) to work not the Mal's ecommerce Setup

Hi Sam - I mistakenly posted this under another forum area as I am learning how to navigate your site. Anyway, here it is as a New Post:
I am testing your product to build a new site - it seems pretty awesome. However, I have a couple of issues that need to be resolved:
1) In the Product Design screen, I Can't Get the "View" field (Item Name) to work. It has a drop down arrow at the right that only allows me to keep the default text in the field: "Enter a short item name description. This is a required field". I checked the"Overrides" tab and found that the "Item Name (required)" check box was checked and also grayed out to prevent us from making changes.
2) The second issue is when I went to Setup/Select an e-commerce shopping cart service/Mal's e-commerce/Setup, I could not enter a new Username (userid) - next to that field was red text saying Demo Mode. And, I could also not enter my Mal's server name.
Are these not available in the shareware version? If not let me know. If they are, I would appreciate your help on these issues.
I do intend to buy this program since, so far, it seem to be able to do everything I need it to do and I will be building multiple websites in the next few months.
You can email me if you wish at the email on file.
Thanks again for your help.

You're right on top of it

Thanks again Sam - your timely and informative responses are a very nice breath of fresh air. As a result of your support for an unregistered user, I will be purchasing your registration code tonight.
By the way, where are you located?
Have a great evening.

How long before I get my Registration Code?

Thanks Sam.
1) How long will it be before I get my Registration Code? I checked my email this morning and didn't see it.

2) How do I get the database to be the inventory tupe? - I didn't see that in you video tutorial (nice videos by the way).

3) If I change the databse to the inventory type, will it affect my current ads? If so, how?

Just curious - where are you located or what time zone are you in?

RE: How long before I get my Registration Code?

Carlos:

(1) I sent the registration code to you last light using the email address paris1968@..... This was the email address that was used for the PayPal purchase. Anyways, I sent it to you again, to both this address and to your XLEcom web site account's email address. You should get it from either one of these email accounts.

(2) The DemoStore inventory sample file is located in the Modules folder. If you used the default installation path, then it is located at the following path C:\Program Files\XLEcom\Modules\DemoStore. It is provided as an example on how you can create an Inventory Database for you Products using formulas in the spreadsheet. You do not have to use it in its present format. You can change it or create a new one based on your needs.

(3) Take a look at the inventory sample file. You can see that when the Inventory values are zero, the Publish Ad values change to FALSE and therefore the products with zero quantities do not get published. Take a look at the formulas in the spreadsheet so you can understand how to create your own Inventory type database.

I am located in California.

Got the Registration Code & Inventory Question

You're Great!
Thanks for the code and the answers.

I just played around with the IDemo nventory Database. Then I went over to my database and manually changed the 1st. "User" column to the "Inventory" Column and transferred the "Publish Ad" formula . The formula works fine, but, when I switched to the Product Design area, I did not see a place that had a field to put in the Inventory numbers or costs. Is the only place to do this in the Databse itself with manual data entry?

You're in California... good place. I was raised in So Cal in the 50's and 60's.

Again... thanks for all your help.

RE: Inventory Question

Carlos:

These fields, if you are referring to the example Inventory DemoStore, are the four (4) User Columns in the center of the Database spreadsheet. You have to remember to first uncheck the four Option check boxes in these four fields. Once unchecked, you will see the field names appear on the Product Design sheet. You also have to press the "Override" button on the Product Design sheet and uncheck the Profit field.

Next, create you product ad and press the "Save Ad" button to transfer the data to the Database sheet. When you are done with entering all of your product ads, switch to the database and copy the formulas from both the Profit and Our Price (Required) fields down to the new product ads you just created (you can take the formulas from the Demo sheet). Next, format the numbers in the Markup field as % and place "new" values for the Percentages. This is because when you format the numbers as percentages (%), the values become off by a factor of 100 due to Excel's automatic number conversion.

Need Clarification on Unchecking Option Boxes

Thanks Sam.
Hopefully this will be the last time for a while that I need your assistance. I Need Clarification on Unchecking the four Option check boxes in the four user fields.
I am working with my own store and ads at this time and I have added the 4 columns to the database and renamed them by copying the names from the example Inventory Demo Store.
I can't seem to find where to uncheck the four Option check boxes in the four fields.

The the example Inventory Demo Store is only the Product and category parts of the Demo Store. Am I supposed to relaod the original Demo Store file? If so, how do I do that?

The second part of your answer is very clear and I know how to do the formulas, etc.

Thanks again,
- Carlos

RE: Need Clarification on Unchecking Option Boxes

Carlos:

If you don't see the Option check boxes, then you are not using version 3.0. Download XLEcom version 3.0.

Below is an image of these Option check boxes contained on the Database sheet.

I get it now !!! & Some more questions

Thanks Sam
1) I did not realize that the "Item Name" field will automatically fill in the "View" drop-down box - I was so busy working/testing new ad stuff that I missed the result.
Thanks again.

2) By the way, are we notified of upgrades?
In your"File Download Section" there is a link: "Download - Official XLEcom Release". Will that always be the latest release?

3) This is what I read in your "XLEcom Release History" section:
All your other version 2.0 data such as the Categories, Site Themes, and FTP Account settings can be imported into the new version 2.2 via the Import utility . First export the data from version 2.0 using the Export utility and then import the data into version 2.2 using the Import utility. The Import / Export utilities can be accessed via the Product Design sheet.

It applies to an older version - does this still apply to the newer 3.0? And, if so, when we export, do we just export to a file of our choosing?

Once again, thanks a lot.
- Carlos

RE: I get it now !!! & Some more questions

New Releases
I try to notify people who purchased a registration code of new releases. Otherwise, you will have to check the web site from time to time and see if there is a newer version. The Download section will always have the latest release.

Upgrading from Version 2.3 to Version 3.0
All the key data form version 2.3 such as the Product Database, Categories, Site Themes, and FTP Account settings can be imported into the new version 3.0 via the Import utility. First export the data from version 2.3 using the Export utility and then import the data into version 3.0 using the Import utility. The Import / Export utilities can be accessed via the Product Design sheet.

Note: Since version 2.3 and below did not have the capability to automatically import or export the Support Pages, you therefore must transfer this data manually into version 3.0. For version 3.0 and future releases, this will not be an issue.

RE: I can't get the "View" Item Name and Mal's settings to work

Carlos:

Question 1:
Why can't I get the "View" field (Item Name) to work?

Answer 1:
First of all, if you cleared the Product Database you will "only" see this message "Enter a short Item name description. This is a required field." in the View drop-down scroll box and nothing else.

You are seeing this message because it is prompting you to enter data for your first product ad. This message appears in two situations, 1) After you clear the database, and 2) when you press the "New Ad" button. Pressing the "New Ad" button creates a placeholder in the Database for your new Product Ad and prompts you with this message in the Item Name (Required) field.

This "View" drop-down scroll box on the Product Design sheet is a selection item, not an editable item. This drop-down scroll box is used for selecting which Product Ad you want to be displayed on the Product Design sheet for either editing or for previewing. See the screen shot image below. If you experiment with the demo data that was initially included with the file, you will see what I mean.

Question 2:
Why can't I change the User ID and web server account settings?

Answer 2:
This is because it is a Shareware version. Once purchased and registered, you will be able to change these account settings. Remember, the Shareware program initially included a demonstration web site so that you could become familiar with XLEcom's features and behavior.

How do I get info the "View" field (Item Name) to work?

Thanks for the reply Sam - if I am creating a new ad, how do I get the field in the drop down box to have the item I need?
Is there another way to update the database other than using the database summary? Or is that the only way to do it?

RE: How do I get info the "View" field (Item Name) to work?

Carlos:

I guess you don't quite understand how creating a Product Ad works.

You must have product data in the database for the "View" drop-down box to work. Take a look at the "Product Design" video tutorial. It should answer your question.

To create a Product Ad, do the following:

Switch to Product Design sheet and create your Product Ads using the spreadsheet interface. Enter the Ad's data into the cells and when finished press the Save Ad button to store the Ad's data in the Database on the Database sheet. To create a new Ad, press the New Ad button and repeat this process for all your other Ads.
