Saving a New Store / Multiple Stores

Hi Sam,
I downloaded XLEcom from Downloads.com and so far I am extremely excited about the software and its professional capabilities. I am experimenting with the trial version and WILL register it right away - regardless of your answer to my questions! :D

I am building a webstore for an online bookstore, reading lounge and coffee shop and I need to create separate stores for each "department" of my store. So, if you are shopping for gifts, you don't necessarily see the book categories to the left of the page.

Am I missing the instructions on how to do this? Even if I only create one store, how do I save my store module and still "keep" the demo for reference. And, when I create a new store, am I overwritting the previous store saved on my hard drive? It seems so basic - but even when I was experimenting, I changed all the categories and it is now a permanent change on my demostoreonline.

My website grand opening is June 16th so I hope to hear an answer soon! Thank you!

RE: Saving a New Store / Multiple Stores

Deidre:

(1) Retaining a copy of the XLEcom DemoStore

To retain a copy of the DemoStore so that you can refer back to it as a reference, make a copy the original XLEcom.xls file and rename it to DemoStore.xls.

(2) Creating Multiple Independent Web Stores

The Store Module feature is used to import and export different products into the same store, thus keeping the same Store name and Support page information. If you want to have multiple independent stores, I recommend you have three (3) independent copies of the XLEcom folder for each of your stores. The simple way to do this is to create two additional copies of the XLEcom folder.

For example:

C:\Program Files\XLEcom (default installation location - Store 1)
C:\Program Files\XLEcom_Store_2 (Store 2)
C:\Program Files\XLEcom_Store_3 (Store 3)

After you create the two additional XLEcom folders, you need to change Directory Folder Path Locations for these two additional stores. For Stores #2 and #3, open the XLEcom.xls files one at a time and switch to Product Design sheet and press the "Setup" button to change the directory folder path locations. For better file management, I recommend that you rename each copy of the three original XLEcom.xls files to something like the following:

XLEcom-Store-1.xls
XLEcom-Store-2.xls
XLEcom-Store-3.xls

or

Store-1.xls
Store-2.xls
Store-3.xls

For more information on setting up three independent stores on your web server, see the following topic:

Domain Pointers and How to Set Them Up

If you do not want to use a different domain name for each store, then just create three subfolders on your web server and upload the store files to each of these store subfolders. Next, create a home page in the domain's root directory that list the names of the three stores and provides access links to each of them.

For example:

index.html (Home page in the domain's root directory)

/store1
- index.html (Home Page for Store 1)
- html (folder)
- images (folder)

/store2
- index.html (Home Page for Store 2)
- html (folder)
- images (folder)

/store3
- index.html (Home Page for Store 3)
- html (folder)
- images (folder)

Thank You!

Excellent! That is exactly the information I needed (and just as thorough as I needed it!)

I've got a lot a work ahead of me so I'm going to register my copy right now and I'll list my site when it's completed by this June 16th!

Confused!!!

Sorry Sam! I hope I'm not too much of a pain!
I've decided to go with the store module aspect of creating the individual stores within my one main store so that I can keep the same design and support pages. However, my XLEcom.xle was changed - so I also made individual files such as XLEc-gifts.xle.

I was able to open it, change file paths (after creating every subfolder manually!) and create a store module, but it didn't copy any of the html or image files over. So, I tried to import the old module and it jacked up the file pathways I'd just created.

I'm just not sure if I'm doing it right. What should the setup pathways be for each new module? Should I be importing or creating new? And if I create new, how do I copy over all the necessary files? (I keep the "Copy all file assests" box checked)

Finally, if I open a new store module (file/open/module folder/pat test 6/10/2006) how come it doesn't "link" with the main .xle program in order to show the other worksheets besides database and categories? Sorry, I told you I was confused!

My test file came out great so I created my first module. But now my XLEcom.xle file shows the paths for my 1st store module, but no html or image files transfered.
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Assets\images\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Assets\images\products\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Assets\html\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Modules\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Preview\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Publish

My XLEc-coffeetea.xle pathways happened automatically:
C:\Program Files\XLEcom\
C:\Program Files\XLEcom\Modules\PatTest\products\
C:\Program Files\XLEcom\Modules\PatTest\html\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Modules\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Preview\
C:\Program Files\XLEc-gifts\Publish

Hopefully this will be the last of it, 'cause I have a lot to do!

RE: Confused!!!

Deidre:

Do not use the Store Module approach because this approach will publish your site to one location. Use the approach described in (2) Creating Multiple Independent Web Stores above. It is simple and straight forward and will publish to different locations.

First setup the first store with all your support pages and then make copies of this store as a template for the other two stores.

If you want to discus by phone, send me and email and I will reply to it with my phone number.
